The Magnet and the Iron: John Brown and George L. Stearns The Stories Behind the Busts

Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was a New England sculptor responsible for the Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial now located at the edge of the Boston Common. The memorial took Saint-Gaudens thirteen years to sculpt, during which time it grew significantly larger than was originally planned. It is now considered one of America’s masterpieces of public art.

In 1891, Tufts College was gifted a bas-relief of Dr. Edwin Hubbell Chapin that was a replica of the same piece created by Saint-Gaudens for the Church of the Divine Paternity in New York City. The bas-relief has since resided in the Goddard Chapel at Tufts University.
