2018: Leading Research on Global Pathogens

Dr. Saul Tzipori

Cryptosporidium is the second leading cause of diarrheal illness for infants and children in developing countries, though cases in the U.S. have been on the rise. Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine has had a long history of investigation of this pathogen and is now a leader in renewed studies identifying treatment methods. Saul Tzipori, distinguished professor of microbiology and infectious diseases at Cummings, has made the study of cryptosporidium and other intestinal diseases his life’s work. In 2018, Tzipori and his team collaborated with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital to develop a way to freeze crypto oocycts–the infectious form of the parasite–paving the way to development of improved treatments.
