1940s: Adventures in Antarctica
Adventures in Antarctica: Many Jumbos have left their mark in various locations, but maybe none as daringly as Professor Robert L. Nichols, A26, H78. Nichols conducted expeditions to extreme terrains such as Antarctica, even naming a glacier formation on Alexander Island the Tufts Pass. An avid explorer, he made 17 expeditions during his life, contributed greatly to research in the geologic history of Antarctica and Greenland, and received the Antarctic Service Medal from the U.S. Department of Defense. He was chair of the Department of Geology by 1940, and a full professor by 1946. An enthusiastic teacher, he instilled a love of geology in four decades of students.
