“In the work that now lies before me, and all of us at Tufts, I start from the foundation of excellence that has been built here over the past century and a half.”

– Anthony Monaco, inaugural speech, October 21, 2011

Tufts welcomed Anthony P. Monaco as its thirteenth president in 2011. The first M.D. and neuroscientist to serve as president, Dr. Monaco came to the University after twenty years at Oxford University, having established his reputation as an exceptional scientist and administrator. In his inaugural address, President Monaco reflected on the enduring value of higher education in a world of complex problems and recalled Tufts’ legacy of promoting active citizenship. His leadership in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the acquisition of the SMFA, and the completion of the Cummings Center and Green Line Extension project are only part of the legacy President Monaco will leave behind.
